(Thighplasty)
Body changes brought on by aging and excessive weight loss, are two of the most common reasons why the skin on the thighs gets loose and flabby. A thigh lift is the recommended procedure to slim and contour the thighs. Thigh lift surgery may be performed on the inner thighs (medial thigh lift), or outer thighs (lateral thigh lift), to remove excess fat and skin.
Are you a good candidate?
Thighplasty is a suitable procedure for individuals who are at a stable weight, but have been unable to reduce excess fatty tissue in the upper thighs, despite regular exercise and dieting. People who have undergone a weight reduction program, and would like to eliminate sagging skin and tone and shape the thighs, are also good candidates.
The Procedure
Thigh lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure. However, depending on the degree of correction, patients may require an overnight hospital stay.
The incisions for thigh lift surgery are generally made inside the groin, and extend downwards to the back of the thighs. However, the pattern of the incision is influenced by the area being treated, and extent of skin laxity.
Recovery
Patients should limit movement during the first few days of recovery, so as not to stress the sutured areas. Light activity can be resumed after about 10-14 days. A compression garment may be worn for at least the first month, as it helps to minimize swelling and enhance the contours. Patients are normally able to return to work within 2 to 3 weeks.
Risks
Possible risks of thighplasty include persistent pain, fluid accumulation, infection, bleeding, and asymmetry. Patients are therefore advised to closely follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions to lessen the chance of risks.
